Notes:  Joseph Richard Harsh was born in Los Angeles County, California, on 14 Jul 1918.  His parents were Charles and Bertha (Merryman) Harsh.
In the 1920 U.S. census, the family was living at 141 Eddy Avenue, Eagle Rock, Los Angeles County.  He had an older sister Virginia Helen, and an older brother Charles Maxfield.  In the 1930 U.S. census, the family was living at 5254 Dalhia Drive in the City of Los Angeles.  In many of the records, Joseph went by his middle name, Richard.

In 1931, when Joseph was 12 years old, his parents evidently took him and his sister Virginia to Europe for a vacation.  Returning home, they left Antwerp on 24 Jul 1931 aboard the S.S. Lapland, arriving in New York on 2 Aug 1931.  In 1938, Charles and Bertha again went to Europe, this time with Joseph and his older brother Charles.  Returning home they left Hamburg on 28 Jul 1938 aboard theS.S. Deutschland, arriving in New York on 5 Aug 1938.  The family's address for both trips was their Dalhia Drive home.

Joseph probably graduated from Occidental College in Eagle Rock in 1940, as a Richard Harsh is listed in the same class with Rouen Westcott.  The two of them married sisters, Margery Ann Noble and Barbara Ellen Noble.

In 1940 and 1942, Joseph Richard, along with his parents, were registered to vote as Republicans in Los Angeles City Precinct No. 2138, at their 5254 Dalhia Drive address.  His father Charles was retired, and his mother Bertha was listed as a housewife.  He was a student.

Joseph enlisted as a private in the U.S. Army Air Corp on 30 Mar 1942 in Los Angeles.  His enlistment record reports that he was 5'10" tall, weighing 156 pounds.  He had had 4 years of college and was a teacher.  He was still single, but not for long.  He married Barbara Ellen Noble on 15 Oct 1942 at Occidental College, Los Angeles, California.  At the time of his marriage, he was doing phychological testing for the Army Air Corps.

In the 1944 Los Angeles Voter Registration lists, Joseph and Barbara are found living with his parents at 5254 Dalhia Drive.  In 1946 through 1954, they are listed, but only his mother Bertha is now registered to vote.  This was the long time family home, as the Harsh family is listed in the phone book at least through the year 2002.

Joseph and Barbara had six children.  Joseph died 2 Apr 1994 in Los Angeles, California.  He is buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale, California.
