Obituaries of Mary Detwiller Davis and Samuel Davis; abstracted by Mrs. Kenneth Green (Muriel) of Tescott, Kansas and sent to Lyle Detwiller in letter dated 22 Feb 1991.
  • Minneapolis Messenger May 7, 1941
Samuel Davis was born in King County, Canada, January 6, 1843, and died at his home in this city May 2, 1914, aged 70 years, 3 months and 27 days.  In April, 1869, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Detwiller.  Soon after their union they came to the United States and settled in Illinois.  After living a short time in that state they came to Kansas and lived for a time on a farm seven miles south of this city.  After two years they again returned to Illinois.  Returning to Kansas later they settled on a farm seven miles north of this city where they resided until 1895, when they moved to North Dakota.  After living there eleven years they once more returned to Kansas and have resided in this city since then.  The active years of Mr. Davis' life were spent in farming.  He was a quiet, home-loving man, and while he was not blessed with children of his own, he was known as Grandpa Davis to all children in his neighborhood, while the whole town knew him as Uncle Sam Davis.  About 30 years ago he and Mrs. Davis united with St. Paul's Lutheran Church of this city.  He is survived by one brother who lives in Canada, and his faithful wife, who will continue to make her home in this city.  We have known Mr. Davis for over 30 years, and can truthfully say of him,   "He lived to bless mankind".
The funeral services were held in the Lutheran Church in this city on Monday [4 May 1914] at 2:00 o'clock.  The church was filled with friends.  The services were conducted by Rev. Chas. W. Seville, pastor of the Lutheran Church of this city.  The remains were laid to rest in Highland Cemetery.

  • Mary Detwiller Davis, daughter of [Christian] and Marion Detwiller was born in Waterloo, Canada, September 1, 1847; and died at the home of her niece, Mrs. Andrew Zucker, where she had made her home for the past ten years, on the sixth of February this year.  She attained the ripe old age of 83 years, 5 months, and 6 days, the last survivor of her immediate family, although she left a host of other relatives.
She was united in marriage to Samuel Davis in 1869; coming to Kansas in 1874, where she lived the most of her life with the exception of a few years in North Dakota.  Her husband preceded her in death in 1914.  Mrs. Davis has been a faithful member of the Lutheran Church for a great many years.  She was a good neighbor, a kind friend to all who shared her acquaintance.  She was the last of a large family of brothers and sisters, although not the youngest of them all.  She never had children of her own, but she did have a very large number of nephews and nieces who now remain to mourn her departure.  The following grand nephews served as pall-bearers at the last service held in her memory:  Kenneth Ballou, Rubert Smith, Lester Smith, Clement Smith, John Sams, and Alva Bremerman.  The funeral service was conducted from the First Presbyterian Church of Minneapolis, Sunday, the 8th of February, 1931, at 2:00 P.M., Dr. J.C. Everett in charge.  Interment was at the Highland Cemetery in the family [p]lot.
We wish to extend our thanks for the beautiful flowers and the messages of sympathy that came to us at the death of our aunt, Mrs. Mary Davis.
