Notes:  Walter Herbert Slack was born 21 Jun 1868 in Toquerville, Washington County, Utah.  He was the seventh of nine children of Martin Slack and Elizabeth Ann Jeffries, both of whom were born in England..  In the 1870 U.S.census, Walter, 2, was living with his parents, Martin Slack, 42, and Elizabeth, 36, in Tokerville, Kane, Utah Territory.  His father was a farm laborer.  His siblings were Augustus, 16, Lorenzo, 13, Martin, 11, Oliver, 9, Eliza A., 6, and Horrace, 5.
In the 1880 U.S. census, Walter Herbert, 11, was living with his parnets, Martin Slack, 54, and Eliza Ann, 44, on Spring Street in Springdale, Kane, Utah Territory.  His fater is now listed as a farmer.  His siblings at home were Oliver, 19, Eliza Ann, 17, Horace Lyman, 15, Vernon Franklin, 9, and Isabell, 4.  Walter attended school in Toquerville, and later the Brigham Young academy.

Walter H. Slack married Mary Eleanor Bringhurst on 5 Mar 1890 in the St. George temple, St. George, Washington, Utah.  He had five children from this marriage:  Selinda, Irma, Walter, Nelson (died as an infant) and Nelle.  His wife Mary died in 1899.

In the 1900 U.S. census, Walter H. Slack, 31, now widowed, was living with his parents Martin, 74, and Eliza A., 65, in Toquerville, Washington, Utah.  His father was a now a lawyer, and Walter was a teacher.  His daughter Selinda, 9, and son, Walter H., 4, were listed in the household.

Walter H. Slack married Adelaide Martha Jackson on 28 Aug 1900 in St. George, Washington, Utah.  They had grown up together in Toquerville. 

In the 1910 U.S. census, Walter E. Slack, 31, and Adeliade Slack, 31, were living in Toquerville, Washington, Utah.  Walter was a farner, working on his own account.  Their home was owned with a mortgage.  The children from Walter's first marriage were Selinda, 19, Irma, 17, Walter H., Jr., 14, and Nellie, 10.  Their children were Riley L., 8, Harold E., 6, Adele, 4, Lulu, 2, and Francis M., 6 months.

In the 1920 U.S. census, Walter H. Slack, 51, and Alaide, 51, were living on their farm on State Road in Toquerville, Washington, Utah.  Walter was the Postmaster.  Their home still had a mortgage.  The children at home included Walter H., 24, and Riley L., 18, both working as laborers on the farm; Harold C., 16, Adele, 14, Llola, 12, Francis M., 10, and Glen J., 8, all attending school.

In the 1930 U.S. census, Walter H. Slack, 61, and Adelaide M. Slack, 61, were living on the West Side of Main Street, Toquerville, Washington, Utah.  Their home was owned, valued at $3,000., and they did not have a radio set.  Walter was a general farmer with employees.  Still at home were Riley L., 28, and Francis M., 20, both working on road building.  Also in the home was Oliver Slack, 69, Walter's brother.

Adelaide died 14 Jan 1937 at their home in Toquerville of Uremia following Pneumonia.  She was buried in the Toquerville Cemetery on 16 Dec 1937.

Walter married Myrtle Ivory Field on 29 Aug 1939 in the St. George temple, St. George, Washington, Utah.

In the 1940 U.S. census, Walter H. Slack, 71, and his wife Myrtle, 50, were living on Highway 89 in Toquerville, Washington, Utah.  Now retired, Walter was no longer living on a farm, and owned their home valued at $1800. Walter had completed four years of high school, and Myrtle had completed 8th grade.  Living with them was Oliver Slack, 79, a brother, and John W. Porter, 12, a stepson.

Throughout his life, Walter was active in both church and civic affairs.  He was baptized in 1977, and by 1890 had been ordained a Deacon, a teacher, and an Elder.  In 1918 he was ordained a Bishop, presiding over the Toquerville Ward.  He served as a missionary three times, and did temple work for ten years.  He served as the mayor of Toquerville, was a commissioner and assessor, teacher and school board member, justice of the peace, and served on the Toquerville water board.  He raised livestock and worked as an accountant.

About 1945, Walter amd Myrtle moved to St. George, Washington, Utah.  He died in his home in St. George on January 1, 1950 of a sudden heart failure.  Funeral services were held 4 Jan 1950 in the Toquerville ward chapel.  He was buried next to his second wife, Adelaide, in the Toquerville Cemetery, Toquerville, Washington, Utah.
