Walter Herbert Slack Dies; Toquerville Service

      Walter Herbert Slack, 81, died at his home in St. George Sunday afternoon, January 1, of a heart ailment.
      Mr. Slack came to St. George to make his home some three years ago, from Toquerville.  Funeral services were held at Toquerville Wednesday afternoon in the ward chapel and were conducted by Bishop Howard Fish.
      He was born in Toquerville June 21, 1868, a son of Martin and Eliza Ann Jeffries Slack.  He attended school at Toquerville and later the Brigham Young academy.
      Mary Elenore Bringhurst became his wife March 1890, in the St. George L.D.S. temple and she died in 1899.  He then married Adelaide Martha Jackson in August 1900, and she passed away in 1937 and he then remarried in August, 1939.  Mrs. Myrtle Ivory Field of Lyman, Wyoming became his wife at this time.
      He was active in both civic and church affairs.  He served as mayor of Toquerville for several terms, was a commissioner and assessor and school board member for Washington county, justice of the peace and officer of Toquerville water board.
      He traded in livestock, raised fruit and worked as an accountant.
      He was bishop of the Toquerville ward for many years, was also ward clerk, he served as a missionary three different times, was a stake Sunday school officer and for the past ten years has done temple work.
      He is survived by his widow and the following sons and daughters:  Mrs. Linda Fletcher, Tacoma, Wash., Mrs. Irma Hackson, Toquerville;  Walter H. Slack, Jr., Hurricane; Mr. Nellie Samot and Glen J. Slack, Salt Lake City; Tiley L. Slack and Miss Lila A. Slack, Compton, Calif.; Harold Eugene Slack, South Gate, Calif.; Mrs. Adele Bunker and Francis M. Slack, St. George; 31 grand-children and 21 great-grandchildren.
